1989 911 Carrera Drive Train Slack

Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 carerra; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 stock; Total Mileage: 128000;

There is slack in my drive train. I believe it may be in the clutch ortransmission. I feel it when I shift gears, and when I let off theaccelerator in the lower gears. I have jacked the car up on both sidesand turned the rear wheels by hand with the car in gear, and can getabout 2 inches of rotational play at the outside edge of the tire.Observing the CV joints while doing this exercise does not show any playbetween rear wheel and axle flange on transmission. When I shift, and theplay is evident, there is also a noise that I would describe as a metalto metal slap noise as the slack is taken up. I've never read about thisparticular problem in any of the tech literature. The transmission is aG50 without limited slip. Car has original clutch, records show that theclutch fork shaft upgrade was performed at 50000 miles. Can you shed anylight on my problem from your experience, before I pull the engine?
