1989 911 Carrera taking longer to start

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 80,000;

I have owned my 3.2 Carrera for 2 years and it has always started right away when the key is turned. Recently, it is taking 3-4 seconds to catch. About the only time it starts right away is when it is stone cold in the morning. I replaced the alternator last year, and the battery is about two years old. The car gives a good-sized puff of smoke on start-up about 50% of the times I start it. Any ideas what is making the car harder to start?
