1989 944 S2 Loss of coolant / in oil

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944 S2; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 75xxx;

After 20 min. of hard driving an '89 944 S2, there's a noticeable loss of coolant and froth and moisture on the inside of the oil cap and on the ball and shaft of the dip stick. First step was to check/replace the headgasket, but with no effect (garage saw some evidence of a deteriorated gasket; also some evidence of surface pitting, but not serious). Second step was to replace the oil cooler seals (again no effect). What do you think is the next most probable cause of this problem, and what do you recommend doing? I also notice that spark plugs 1 and 4 are cleanerlooking than plugs 2 and 3. This did not used to be the case last year.
