1989 944 S2 Voltage drops

Electrical

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944 S2; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 150,000;

My car is having electrical problems. The voltage reading on the in-dash gauge is moving up and down as my cooling fan turns on and off. It drops about 1 volt when the fan kicks on and goes back up when the fan shuts off. It is a repeating cycle with the fan running for 5-10 seconds and then shutting off for 10-20 seconds. When I am at highway speeds for several minutes this stops and the gauge reads 13 volts. At idle or under light throttle the reading drops to about 10 volts when the fan kicks on, the warning light comes on(the big one in the middle of the dash) and the car comes close to stalling. I can keep it runnning by keeping the RPM's up. This is after I replaced the alternator earlier this week when the car lost all electrical power and would not run. The car would start with jumper cables but only run for a coupe of minutes. Should I be looking for a bad ground? What else should I look for?
