1989 944 White smoke at start up

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 94000 Miles;

On start up the car sounds as though it is running on 3 cylinders. As the car warms the idle evens out. As I pull away after about 30 sec-1 minute a plume of white vapor comes from the tail pipe. This happens for about 1.5 -3 km at 50-70 km ambient temperature about 20 Celsius. It then dissipated (unnoticeable) there is coolant in the reservoir and the car does not overheat. There is no evidence of coolant/water mixing on either the dip stick or oil fill cap. Does this condition require immediate attention?
