1989 944S2 Water pump

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944S2; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 72000;

I recently purchased my S2 and when I bought it I got all the records from the dealer who serviced it. Approximately 3000 miles ago the timing belt was changed, however for whatever reason they did not change the water pump. I have been told that they go around 75000 miles. How much of a concern is this? Should I have it changed to eliminate any sudden problem, or is it something that will gradually start to leak to give me a warning? Is it apt to cause a breakage of the timing belt and all the horrible things that would follow? I would hate to go through the additional hassle and expense to do it now when it appears to be working fine, but I wouldn't want to damage my engine.
