1989 964 intermittent hard starting

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: 964; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 127000;

In the 8000 miles of my driving the 964 with its rebuilt engine and TPC supercharger it has run like a bear. However it has intermittently been hard starting in the mornning requiring anywhere from 3-5 cranks of the starter to catch, and then needing to sit and idle (initially at about 400-500 rpm) before running normally. Restarts during the day are much easier. The problem surfaced last year a couple of months after the mods. The builder couldn''t isolate the problem (the alternator is new and the charging system was within specs) and I took the car back and the problem disapeared for about 6k miles then last week it started happening again. The DME and/or the voltage regulator are not the culprits according to my mechanic. He speculates that it may be the head sensor which is the original one (127000 miles and 16 years). I have ordered same but do not want to waste my money or time if this is not the fix. Any advice?Thanks.
