1989 Euro P&C versus US P&C

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera; Year: 1989; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 Euro P&C; Total Mileage: 115,000;

I was told by the previous owner that that "Euro" pistons and cylinders were fitted to my 1989 911 Carrera during an engine rebuild. I have heard that by 1988 that the Euro/ROW engines were identical to US spec engines, with the major differences being chip, fuel pressure regulator and catalytic converter. Are so called "Euro" pistons and cylinders really identical to 1988/1989 pistons and cylinders? Can I identify "Euro" pistons & cylinders without tearing the engine down?
