1990 944 S2 Camshaft chain tensioner

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944S2; Year: 1990; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 172k;

Need some info/input on my current mishap. I have two 1990 S2's. One is a street car (cab) had it for three years and been great.About 6 months ago I bought another one (coupe) to turn into club racer. Been driving on the street during mods and almost done. Suspension etc ready. All safety equipment in place. Engine stock, timing belt fresh etc. OK. now to my problem. Drove it to autocross. when trying to start, big noise and that's it, then cranked over freely. Towed home and a mystery as timing belt intact and lined up. Removed valve cover and found sliding block on tensioner came off and jammed gear and broke chain. Took out both camshaft gear etc. probably also bent valves. Now to my question. I have not before heard of a concern of this chain replacement or inspection. I did have valve cover off to inspect about 1000 miles ago and looked good. As I redo this, is there updated chain available (this chain is very "cheap" looking single roller. Updated tensioner, how about anybody making updated cams ( need both) So any input very much appreciated. I have had many Porsches but this is my first track Porsche (been racing Chevys.)
