1990 944 S2 Water pump

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944s2; Year: 1990; Body Type: Cabriolet; Total Mileage: 115,000;

Recently lost all the H2O at a hose above the water pump. There is vacume controlled valve that lets the water into the heater core(?). The car starts and runs great; no other problems.1)How do I know if the problem is the pump or just the valve? Or the hose?2) I have owned the car for a little over a year and would guess the pump has not been replaced previously. Is now as good a time to replace the pump? What other maintainance should be done If the water pump needs replacement?3) I consider myself pretty mechanically inclined. Is replacing the water pump a job for a shade tree mechanic? Does it take any special tools, can you suggest the correct process. 4) What should I expect to pay at a local shop advertising in the Panorama mag to replace the pump?
