1990 944S2 Loud groan on deceleration

Transmission

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944 S2; Year: 1990; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 120,000;

My mechanic has diagnosed a transmission bearing as the culprit for a "dry raspy" sound in the rear when on an off the power. There is also a loud rattling when the clutch is released. But I'm trying to figure out a rather loud deep groan from the rear that happens at low speed (30 mph or so) down to a complete stop. I have a rear wheel bearing that needs replacing but it sounds just like any other wheel bearing that's had it. Could this be the wheel bearing making such a really loud noise at such a slow speed or could torque tube bearings or something else be the culprit? (Michelin Pilot Sport 225/45 17" on the rear) I understand that there is quite a bit of resonance going on as standard for the 944 and you just live with it but I'd like to get the back end quiet enough so I can actually hear my exhaust!
