1990 964 Distributor Belt

Vehicle Information: Model: 964 c4 cab; Year: 1990; Body Type: Cabriolet; Total Mileage: 105,000;

I've read numerous times of your warnings of having the distributor belt fail and the ensuing damage that can take place. Aside from removing the caps and inspecting the belt periodically, what else can be done to know if the belt has broken? Cna you tell from the idle, or some other audible or seat of the pants method? One idea I had was to create a system that wold use the electrical impulse in the plug wires to illuminate a light, for example, so that if the light went out, that would mean the belt was no longer turning. Or, it might get really bright as the wire with the pickup would be getting all the impulses. The pickup I thought of would be the type service stations used to do emissions tests and its just a plastic clip that goes around a single plug wire. A friend said that wouldn't generate enough of a signal and would have to be boosted. Do you agree? What would be a good way to boost the signal? ThanksPaul
