1991 928 Auto Transmission Failure

Vehicle Information: Year: 1991; Engine (size, modifications): 5.0; Total Mileage: 30,220; Transmission type: Autotomatic;

All of a sudden I felt my transmission starting to act strange. It was hanging up when coming out of 1st and then not going back down in 1st when manually shifting it down at a stop. I do take it out of town a lot and prefer it to brake close to home (if it has to) - so at the next available stop light I stomped on it and it stared to go in 1st but then acted like the shifter cable broke(I hoped). I coasted to the shoulder and checked everything I could. I had no forward gears working and no reverse. I trailered it to my mechanic and he said it was for sure in the transmission and it would have to come out to see how bad it was. He warned me of a repair cost approaching upwards of $6,000. I trailered it home and now I am wondering how I can find a good replacement transmission. I understand that the 1989-1995's will fit. They are also hard to find. Since this is a Mercedes transmission do you know what models and years would be match? What else should I do at this time - torque tube bearing and torque converter bearings? Which do you think would cost less - a full rebuild on my transmission - or finding a rebuilt?
