1991 944S2 Power window repair

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944 s2; Year: 1991; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 97000;

Problem - window has dead spot half way up and needs to be pushed by hand to get past it. I read over the on-line answer for 'S2 Power window motor', have taken off the door panel and was able to see that the gear has been stripped. Once I find a new/used power unit to replace existing one, what do I do to keep the window up? Any simple ways, or things to be careful with? Also, to separate the lifting arm from the window, should arms slide to the inside or outside of the window to get them off, or are there any special tricks to this? I see that Performance Automation offers a power window kit that is different than the one in my car - any advice on which is better? Since gears were stripped this may mean it had to fight against a lot of resistance - any advice on what to look at, and how to test, to find problem? Or is this simply an age thing. (When I move window past dead spot by hand it seems to just have weight of window resisting)
