1992 964 Oil Thermostat repair

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: 964; Year: 1992; Body Type: Targa; Total Mileage: 116000;

I have seen the many articles on the oil thermostat and the oil cooler operation and judging by my symptoms, I believe that I have a bad oil thermostat. At highway speeds after 30 minutes or so of driving the oil temperature gauge goes to the next mark above the horizontal mark. It does not go any higher but the body panel behind the passenger door gets almost too hot to touch after I stop. I have tested the oil cooler fan by applying 12V and it runs as it should but I do not hear it turn on while driving. Given this information, is it possible to repair the oil thermostat or do I need to buy a new one at >$400.00?
