1995 993 Backfire problem

Engine

Vehicle Information: Year: 1995; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 32,500;

Recently, on several occasions the engine has backfired into the airbox with enough force to blow the four rubber hose couplings loose, dislodging the connections and rendering the car inoperable. (The car re-starts but promptly quits as the mixture is I assume, too lean). In a shotgun approach to remedy the problem the local dealer replaced the distributers but it didn't do the trick. Does anybody have the real answer?
