1995 993 Hydraulic Fluid Dot 3

Brakes

Vehicle Information: Model: 993; Year: 1995; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 107500;

Joel,The recent question and answer regarding using Dot 3 to flush brake system. Are the two fluids compatible? Prior experience with restoring old sports cars shows that when converting to Dot 5, the entire hydraulic system must be very clean and rubber parts replaced. Dot 5 will seep through any worn parts and is not compatible with Dot 3. Old used seals will turn to mush. We use Dot 5 in these restored cars as they see very little use and it eliminates the moisture problem and if the system leaks, you just get very shiny paint rather then the removal of the paint and subsequent rust.Before this flushing system is widely used maybe some one should place some used Porsche brake seals and O rings in a jar of Dot 3 and see what happens to the parts over a period of time.In the past you have provided very useful information to me regarding my 993, it is now for sale on the PCA web site. It will be replaced with a 997.
