1996 993 engine hesitation until warm- REVISED

Vehicle Information: Year: 1996; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 53000;

I bought a used '96 993 coupe with 42K miles 10/02. It developed irregular running at operating temp, including idle surge, dying, and occasional poor starting. Replacement of the engine temp sensor, the cylinder head temp sensor, the DME relay, the engine harness(under recall), and hose couplings resulted in good performance when warm, but irregular performance--hesitation, surging-- until it reaches operating temp. It required several trips to the dealer to even acknowledge the problem, which I am now told can "probably" be fixed by replacing the mass air flow sensor. I am reluctant to take this step without some furthur opinion that this is an appropiate intervention, since the dealer has stated that the monetary gamble is mine, not theirs. Can you help?
