1996 993 rough idle and chk engine light - worn guides

Vehicle Information: Year: 1996; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 58,2000;

A slightly rough idle and recent (constant) illumination of the check engine light on my '96 Carrera coupe have been diagnosed by my local dealer in Cary, NC.The diagnosis: "Secondary air injection ports inside the heads are clogged with excessive carbon."The cause: "worn valve guides"The cure: "valve guide replacement and valve job"Quoted cost: $4K-5KOuch...Does this all sound legitimate to you?Are you aware of any independent Porsche shops in this area that are sufficiently capable of such work (and hopefully, less expensive). My dealer would actually outsource the machining operations.Was this caused or encouraged through excessive heat retention from the 'air & sound management undertray'? Any disadvantages to runing without the tray?As always, thanks for your useful comments.-Mark
