1997 993 check engine light at 69,000

Vehicle Information: Year: 1997; Body Type: Convertible; Total Mileage: 69,000;

Recently the "check engine" light has come on. I spoke with the dealership and they indicated the problem was probably carbon build up around one of the air/fuel sensors. I have reviewed most of the similar items on the PCA question site. Is it really safe to continue to drive the car with this condition or is this mostly a nuisance issue? Also will using some type of fuel additive help alleviate or prevent this problem from reoccurring?
