1997 993 rough engine idle

Vehicle Information: Year: 1997; Body Type: Select One; Total Mileage: 27,000;

I have the dreaded "rough engine idle". After replacing the fuel filter, checking for vacuum leak, testing the spark plug wires, and running several fuel addatives in the fuel, it still exists. Is there anything else to do before getting out the walnut shells and blasting the heads? If it can ever be cured, what can be done to keep carbon from accumulating on the head in the future? I do not baby the car.
