1997 993 spark plug life / 30k maintenance cost surprise

Vehicle Information: Year: 1997; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 27,000;

I am nearing the 30,000 mi. service and called my local Porsche dealer for their price. The quote was $1,200. In answer to my question of why so expensive, I was told that $800-900 of the cost was for labor to replace the spark plugs. I know the plugs are hard to get to, but this is ridiculous. If many cars can go 100,000 mi. on one set of plugs, why can't Porsche. The only reason to replace plugs is because the electrodes erode away. What am I missing here?
