1997 993 syncronizer ring failure

Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Model: 993; Year: 1997; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 17000;

I had the car into the local Porsche dealer for 15,000 mile service and asked about a shifting problem when up shifting into or down shifting from fifth gear. The tech told me the syncronizer ring and possibly the clutching hub are worn and need replacement. I was a little surprised, given the low mileage. The dealer is estimating $5,000 for repairs. I know the car is seven years old, but it only has 17,000 miles on it now. This appears, to me, to be an early failure. Does Porsche have a regional service manager who I could contact for this?
