1998 993 Information Display Blackout

Electrical and Electronic

Vehicle Information: Year: 1998; Body Type: Cabriolet; Total Mileage: 44,000;

I recently had my ignition switch replaced by a local reputable shop. This required dropping the dash, and after reassembly they had to go back in to connect some wires for the hi-lo beams and directional signals which had been inadvertently left off. After reassembling again, we found that the information display (gas mileage, outside air temp, etc.) in the tach head would no longer light up, although the LCD's can be seen very dimly if you look at them with just the right angle of sunlight.The mechanic has checked this and says that the wiring looks like it is correctly hooked up. He says that we are looking at extensive work to get the tach head out of the dash, including disassembly of the steering wheel and airbag. Even then, he thinks the unit is sealed and might have to be sent away for repair, which may only consist of replacing a light bulb. He also suggests that this apparent bulb failure may be a case of simple coincidence and have nothing to do with the work just performed.I am absolutely positive that the information display was working before this whole incident. Do you have any suggestions or thoughts on my predicament?
