1998 C4S Check engine light

Vehicle Information: Year: 1998; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 86,000;

My check engine light comes on continuously.This began after the vehicle was in for replacement of the upper and lower valve covers. The a/c evaporator was also replaced at that time. The dealers says the light is on because the secondary air ports are "carboned up",and it is unrelated to other repairs. I was told the engine must be pulled and disassembled to clean the ports. Does this sound legitimate to you? Would the 100,000 emissions system warranty come into play?
