1999 996 Clutch Replacement

Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Year: 1999; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 39000;

A few questions related to clutch replacement: Complete OEM kits are $400 on-line or $650 from dealer, how much would be reasonable for labor? Is it bad taste to buy parts one place and take to the dealer for installation since obviously profit is lost on parts not sold?How can I best verify the need for a flywheel replacement if once its apart the dealer suggests a new one is in order? Upgraded clutch kits are VERY expensive and usually come with lightened flywheel (also very expensive); are they necessary for 3 times a year DE events? I can live with the lack of feel in the stock clutch, but don't want to have to replace the OEM frequently. Is this like brakes where stock pads don't work well for even one DE; ie stock clutch not advised for DE? Or is the stock clutch really OK if not abused with clutch-slipping starts? Thanks
