1999 996 Exhaust Soot

Vehicle Information: Year: 1999; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 67000;

The driver's side exhaust pipe has developed an accumulation of black soot. The passenger side appears as I would expect (routine dirt of a daily driver, but no soot). The engine runs fine, no unusual smoke, and no warning lights have come on. I burn about a quart of oil every thousand miles. My concern is that one of the two cylinder banks is running rich. I brought the car to the dealer who hooked it to the computer. They said there were no error codes, and that all the critical values (readings from O2 sensors and such) were normal. They feel everything is ok, and that I shouldn't worry about the sooty appearance of the tail pipe. Do you agree?
