1999 996 Passenger Door Failure to Unlock

Vehicle Information: Model: 996 C4; Year: 1999; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 15000;

Twice in the last two months the passenger door has failed to unlock. Neither the remote control, key used manually, or central locking button on the dash will allow the door to open. The window does drop when the exterior or interior door handle is pulled. Pulling the interior door handle twice, per the manual, will not open the door. The mechanical resistance normally felt as the door handle is pulled and the lock mechanism releases is absent. Central locking does not signal any failure via the horn.The first time this occurred, I drove home and dug into the owners manual thinking it may be pilot error. The door still failed to open once I returned home, but returned to working order seemingly on its own after a few hours time. Electrical gremlin, mechanical failure, or pilot error?
