1999 996 Speakers - stereo sound less than expected

Electrical and Electronic

Vehicle Information: Year: 1999; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 15000;

I recently purchased a 1999 996 Coupe and find that the stereo sound is less than expected. I've gotten several price quotes for upgrades from $1000 to $3000 for upgrading speakers and amplifier keeping everything looking stock, as well as keeping the same head unit.It's very easy to spend the money and get it done professionally, if the funds are there.The main problem is I cannot hear the sound coming from the rear speakers unless you stretch you head back there. They do work properly, but not enough to satisfy.What is the most common remedy for this problem?The speakers are very easy to remove, but is there a company that makes a replacement that will fit in without modification as well as utilize the speaker grill? I've called Crutchfield and they don't have a solution.If the current amplifier needs upgrading does it use RCA inputs or line level inputs.Is the stock wiring sufficient to keep for these upgrades.I was tempted to make the appointment to get this done but want to exhaust all of the possibilites in order to make a decision.
