1999 996 transmission failure

Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Year: 1999; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 13213;

Since my factory warranty expires in about 6 months and I have experienced the usual 99 996 gremlins I went to my dealer this morning and purchased an extended warranty. When I pulled out of the parking space I felt a strange thump and then the sound of bearings rattling around inside a coffee can!!!! The service tech put the car on the lift and off the ground left the car idling in gear-- A new trans was immediately ordered. The tech said he had never had this problem before but believed a bearing had failed on the 1st/2nd gear slider.(?)My questions; 1) didn't Porsche make a design change on newer cars-enlarging the input shaft bearings. 2) Could the trans have been damaged when it was removed last month to replace the rear oil seal?3)Will the replacement trans more that likely be a remanufactured part as opposed to a brand new one. I am glad I purchased an extended warranty. So far I'm not impressed with Porsche quality.This car has seen NO track days, NO autocrossing and no other drivers.
