1999 Boxster hood release with locked vehicle and dead battery

Electrical and Electronic

Vehicle Information: Model (Boxster, Boxster S,Cayman, Cayman S): Boxster; Year: 1999; Engine (type, size, modifications): original stock; Total Mileage: 29000; Transmission: Manual;

I recently left my lights on (my bad) for my 1999 Porsche Boxster while it was locked in our parking lot. I was able to access the cabin with the key but could not pop the trunk to access the battery. I had to have the vehicle flat bed towed to the dealship where they used some kind of a harness to get enough power through the fuse box to release the hood (quite a long and expensive process). I understand that later model Boxsters have a pull out terminal from the fuse box that can be accessed with jumper cables to accomplish the same end. Is there a way a regular person can do this with the older Boxsters?
