2000 996 "clunk" or "popping" in rear end REVISED

Suspension and Steering

Vehicle Information: Model: 996; Year: 2000; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 18000;

When I back my 996 out of the garage in the morning, I hear a single "clunk" or "popping" noise in the rear of the car. I then hear this same sound when I accelerate from a stop, as well as when I quickly accelerate while driving. I also hear the same sound when decelerating, or when turning into a driveway. If I accelerate or decelerate really hard, I may hear the "clunk" or "pop" several times in quick succession. This occurs approximately 75% of the time. I do not hear any noises when driving at a steady speed over bumps or on rough pavement. I would appreciate your suggestions on what might be causing this, as well as how serious it may be; e.g. should I get the car to a mechanic right away, or is it OK to keep driving it for awhile ?Region: Lone StarTotal Mileage: 18000Car Use: Street use only
