2000 996 Ignition Switch question

Electrical and Electronic

Vehicle Information: Model: 996; Year: 2000; Body Type: Cabriolet; Total Mileage: 40000;

Joel,I just saw a question regarding a bad 996 ignition sw., to which you replied, " have not had to replace one of these myself, but I am pretty sure you will have to use the new key that comes with the new ignition lock. This might be a job best left to the dealer."Just FYI, the part that is almost universally at fault in these situations (very common on earlier 996s) is the electrical back half of the ignition switch, not the front portion that shows in the dash and accepts the key. Replacement part is readily available on the market, though Porsche has recently changed their approach to one of replacing the entire steering lock assy along with the electrical switch (much bigger and more expensive job). Porsche tech sites on the internet (RennTech) have a great deal of information on performing the quick replacement of the electrical portion, along with info on the Audi part that is the equivalent that Porsche no longer sells as a separate part.
