2000 996 tie rods "dried out" at 20,000 miles

Suspension and Steering

Vehicle Information: Model: 996; Year: 2000; Body Type: Cabriolet; Total Mileage: 19,500;

During an alignment, the tech brought me out to listen to a noise as he turn the front wheels. He said the tie rods had dried out and recommended they be replaced. How can this have happened at under 20,000 miles? Is this a common occurrence?Region: SoutheasternTotal Mileage: 19,500Car Use: Street use only
