2000 GT3 Euro air mass sensor contamination

Vehicle Information: Model: Euro GT3 Mk I; Year: 2000; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 11,300;

I just paid $1350 to replace my air mass sensor that allegedly had become contaminated with oil from a K&N air filter installed about 1000 miles before the car started to act up. I put the filter in the car as it came out of the box. The symptoms seemed to make sense with an air mass sensor problem; hesitation under load, unable to run up to redline (sometimes) and generally just not all there. Have you ever heard of such a problem? It is especially irritating to think you're doing the best things you can for your car and have them bite you. The car has a plain paper filter now!
