Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Year: 2001; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 11500;

I use my Carrera as a daily driver and on the local (Tulsa) limited access highways I often reach the maximum highway speed limit(or even 15-20 mph over the limit) on the entrance ramp, well before I have reached 6th gear. Since I will generally "settle down" at a cruising speed roughly 5 to 10 mph over the posted speed limit, I usually just shift directly to 6th gear (from 4th or even 3rd)without going through the intervening upshifts (since I can't continue to accelerate in the intervening gears). My question: Is this "direct shifting" to 6th from any gear other than 5th a long term detriment to the gearbox? A friend of mine told me that I am probably damaging the syncromesh works by shifting in this manner, even though I don't ever feel any resistance or hear any unusual noises when I do it.
