2001 996 fuel octane-again

Engine

I just read the most recent post about fuel and then went back to my manual and now am totally confused. This is my third Porsche, (previous '85 911 and '89 928S4) and have always run the highest available octane I can get,but not over 100. My manual says 98 RON (93 CLC or AKI). But you say there's no reason to do so. In my other cars, when I run a lower octane the computer tells me I have used the worng fuel, (a 2002 Mini Cooper, for example), so I have to assume that the manufacturers had a reason to specify the high octane. Did I misunderstand your points or are the manufacturers just pushing the higher priced fuel? Thanks. JJ Stives
