2001 996 "High" oil pressure

Vehicle Information: Year: 2001; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 11950;

This morning in my daily drive to work I was travelling at 70 MPH (2800 RPM or so) and I noted that my oil pressure gauge was reading at the full maximum (5.0 or slightly higher). It has always been in the 3.5 to 4.0 range (when driving at cruising speed) since I have owned the car, with the higher pressure occurring in cold weather when the car was not yet at the normal operating temperature. The ambient air temperature this morning was 39 degrees F, but I have run it in much colder weather than that before. I am using Mobil 1 synthetic oil (5W-30)and the oil/filter has been serviced once by my dealer(in 2/02 at 7500 miles)since I bought the car new.Is a high oil pressure potentially damaging to my engine? What could be causing this high pressure? Do I need to get the car in for service/repair?Thanks, Bill Warnock
