2001 996 Transmission Noise REVISED

Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Model: 996; Year: 2001; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 22,000;

I get a chattering sound from the drive train of my car when reversing or moving slowly in traffic. This mostly happens when backing up to park or running in 1st gear at tollbooths or heavy traffic. It seems like the clutch chatters when getting the load or during engagement. Once the car is in motion the noise will go away.I have complained to the local Porsche dealer in Orlando, but they say all 996 have this issue and it is not a problem. They say that it is due to the flywheel mass, and have also demonstrated to me the loud clunk that happens when you kill the engine with the clutch depressed while in 1st gear. I can duplicate the problem 99 % of the time by releasing the clutch slowly, especially in reverse. Is this an early indication of transmission failure? I must say shifting is ok and very smooth and the car only has 22k miles. The dealer recently performed RMS surgery and now seems reluctant to do anymore complicated work under the warranty. Maybe when the warranty is over in a couple of months they will be happy to sell me a transmission. What can you tell me about this problem?Total Mileage: 22,000Car Use: Street use only
