2001 C2 Brake Problem

Joel,Thanks for the rich reply. I can probably avoid this whole thing by 1) Keeping the brake pads above 50%2) Softening up the braking.But I am still fascinated by this problem from a control system point of view. Can I direct you to "make the ABS panic" statement you made? Is there a particular behavior you had in mind? I am thinking you're spot on in that I was playing w/ late braking and was hitting them hard prior to any weight transfer. My theory is the ABS engaged and the last idea it had of traction was "not very much". However, I was thinking the ABS is a "closed loop" and would modulate the brakes w/o having or needing a concept of the initial level of traction when the ABS engaged. If this is not the case, or if there is a delay or running average going on in the ABS brain, which is not conducive w/ the "I REALLY need to stop NOW" track concept (hmm, isn't this the panic stop concept which is why it's there in the first place?), then I understand why this "slipping on ice" phenomenon happens from a black box point of view. It might also explain why letting off and slamming the brakes again would be effective. Only fractions of a second would have elapsed so it's not an overtemp issue. This would give the ABS another shot w/ much more weight transferred to the front. This is only a theory. But if so, I guess the software that controls the ABS would need to be analyzed which ain't gonna happen. At least I can get the codes checked. And if everything checks out, then this ABS behavior I could conclude is part of the late braking envelope w/ a commensurate "Don't do that" :-). Finally, if I had no ABS, I would most probably lock up a tire or 2, i.e., I wouldn't hit them so hard w/o ABS. So, yes, I am leaning on the ABS system just to test it out. It's just that a locked up tire has way more stopping power than a panic'ing ABS. Sorry for the long winded reply.Thanks Joel.
