2002 996 Carrera Airbox Muffler

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 2002; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 15700;

I've been reading a lot of debate about the airbox muffler/resonator (rectangular chamber, inside left hand side of the airbox) which is connected to the main air intake prior to the mass airflow sensor. If removing it, like what the fabspeed cold air intake kit does, reduces horse power? I know that it make the engine sound louder, but aside from that, does it have a functional purpose of helping gain more power? Someone in a forum said that it has an equal volume of one of the cyl which helps the pulsating air be pulled in more efficiently. Please help in verifying this. Thank you much.
