2002 996 Engine temperature

Vehicle Information: Model: 996; Year: 2002; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 61000;

Temp gage reading has always stayed a hair over the 180 mark, until a week ago. Now, at freeway speed, the temp still stays near 180, even when the outside temp gets to 90F. However, in stop & go traffic the temp rises to straight-up 12:00 noon on the temp gage. It didn't do this before. Also, the engine compartment fan is kicking in more often after engine shut-down after a long stop & go drive across town. Can the radiator fans be turning slower with age?Do the radiators tend to get clogged internally?How do I investigate further?Thanks.
