2002 996 TT Engine Replaced

Vehicle Information: Year: 2002; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 16500;

I recently took my car in for a persisent noise from the rear of the car. It sounded like a lawnmower. The dealer suggested that the power steering pump had failed. They replaced the pump but the noise persisted and they concluded that an internal bearing was causing the noise. In typical Porsche fashion they immediately replaced the engine with a rebuilt one. 250 miles later so far so good. My question is how prevalent is the replacement of these engines at a cost of 25k or so. They assured me that a rebuilt was "better" and that the change would be documented extensively.
