2003 996 Wheel Cracks

Wheels and Tires

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera ; Year: 2003; Body Type: Cabriolet; Total Mileage: 36000;

I recently had new rear tires mounted. The garage had problems mounting them and I later noticed several chips and scratches on the rear wheels. After 4000 miles I noticed vibration and it kept getting worse. I thought that perhaps the tires needed to be spin balanced. Another garage took off the wheels and noticed the inside sidewalls were deformed and had splits in the sidewalls (both rear tires). They also noticed a similar crack in each wheel that are about 1" long and started at the rim. The front tires and wheels have no problems. My question is, could the cracks be from mounting the tires? Given that there were no problems on the front and the fact that I only had new tires installed on the rear coupled with the fact that the garage obviously struggled with the tire installation (evident by all the chips and scratching) I feel the cracks were caused by the person mounting the tires. The car is not driven in the winter and driven very very conservatively in the summer. Are cracked wheels common? I have LT alloy 18" on the rear.
