6V starter

Vehicle Information: Model: 356C; Year: 1964; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 1600; Total Mileage: 44K;

I got a 356C from my grandparents and the car has been parked outside for 34 years and now inside my garage for 5 years, and I am trying to restore it and get it rolling on public streets again, hopefully very soon. Engine was removed from car for inspection and body repair and will be painted to the original color. Transmission is still in the car, but just received a good hot bath and scrubbed out all 40 yrs of dirt accumulated from New York to California. 6V starter removed yesterday and repainted black. How do I know if the starter is still working ? Can I just hook the starter's terminals up to my 12V battery and see if it still turns or do I risk burning up the starter with 12V connected? What are the signs that I will I see or hear to confirm that the 6v starter is still working?
