74 911 Shift linkage adjustment

Vehicle Information: Model: 911; Year: 1974; Body Type: Targa; Total Mileage: 72,000;

Ed,I have recently replaced a broken shift linkage bushing. When the bushing broke it left the transmission stuck in gear. I eventually got the transmission into neutral so that I could reattach the shifter to the linkage. I then proceeded to attach the shifter to transmission. It took me many frustrating hours to get the right setting before I was able to select all gears including reverse. Prior to this effort the car shifted cleanly, now I find first gear is a little challenging to find. However, I am reluctant to start over again until I heard from you. What is the procedure for setting up the linkage, I can not believe the factory or other service shops go through what I went through. If you know of a trick to attach the linkage quickly I would greatly appreciate you sharing it with me.Thanks for your time.
