83 944 won't start

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944): 944; Year: 1983; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5L, 8 Valve, 5 speed, no modifications; Total Mileage: 80,500;

My '83 944 had not given me any problems for months until yesterday. I drove from one side of Hattiesburg, MS, to the other and back through heavy, stop and go traffic. The car ran fine; the coolant fan kicked on several times and the temp gauge ran on the hot side as it always does during stop and go driving. At the end of this round trip of about 20 miles, I stopped at a restaurant to eat. I was in the restaurant about 30 minutes. When I came out, the car would not start. It cranked fine, but never caught. I cranked on it off and on for about 20 minutes, never cranking longer than about 8 seconds a crank. Never once did the car turn over; it just cranked and cranked. I walked back to my apartment, got my other Porsche and returned to the '83 about three hours later and the car started and ran fine. I drove it back to my apartment and haven't ran or tried to start it since. I topped off the coolant today. What do you think caused this starting problem?
