86 Carrera driveline noise

Suspension and Steering

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1986; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 116,500;

While driving my recently purchased 1986 Carrera, I've been noticing a low-frequency rumbling sound coming from the rear of the car that's not associated with engine rpms, and is present even when the car is just rolling. The noise varies in intensity from high-low about once per wheel revolution, and is always present, on straights or in a turn. I'm guessing on the once-per-wheel-revolution, but that seems about right.Have considered wheel bearings or CV joints, but of course the gearbox is a possibility.Basically, the car is mint, well maintained, and appears never to have seen a hard day in its life. If I had to guess, this might be something that is just wearing out at this mileage point. Or maybe not.Any places to look first? Ways to determine source? Would an axle change on both sides be a first step toward the repairs?Thanks
