911 1970 Backfiring / Low Power

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: 911T; Year: 1970; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.2 with PMO Webers; Total Mileage: ~45K;

Ed:The background:I replaced my Zenith's with PMO Webers a bit over a year ago and they worked fabulously. I also replaced the distributor, coil, plugs, wires, points and condensor. The car ran great with good power and smooth idle once warmed up. It always backfired and burbled on start, but smoothed out after 2 minutes or so of running. The problem:After a brisk run through the southern Indiana hills, the car began to backfire and power dropped considerably and I hobbled home. The engine seemed considerably hotter than usual, though the temp guage only indicated ~210 degrees. The questions:1) The backfiring has continued even after replacing fuel, fuel filters, checking float levels, dwell and timing. Where should I be looking next?2) Assuming that I may need to disassemble the carbs again, I'd like to eliminate the backfiring on cold start. Where would I start with this? New idle jets? Thanks!
