911 Charging dual batteries

Vehicle Information: Model: 911T; Year: 1973; Body Type: Targa; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.4 CIS; Total Mileage: 110,000;

I left my 73.5 911T sit a bit too long this winter so when I did try to start it, the batteries did not have the oomph to turn the engine over. Since I don't really understand the dual battery arrangement, I pulled the batteries and trickle charged them, then the car started fine. If this happens again, there must be an easier way -- would you describe how I can safely trickle charge the batteries without pulling them out of the car, and also how to jump start the car. Thanks very much.
